A young female singer who rose to fame after appearing on the popular TV show "The Voice" died on Saturday after being shot at a concert hall in Orlando, Florida, local police said.
Christina Grimmie, 22-year-old New Jersey native, was shot to death by a male gunman after giving a concert in Orlando on Friday night. She died early Saturday, local police said.
"She was doing a meet-and-greet, just signing autographs and selling merchandise. This white male approached her and opened fire, striking her," Orlando Police Chief John Mina said at a news conference. "We believe he came here to commit this crime."
According to police, the gunman, later identified by local authorities as 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl of Saint Petersburg, Florida, was armed with two handguns and a hunting knife. He killed himself after being tackled by the singer's brother.
So far, the motive for the attack remained unknown. However, Mina told reporters that so far there was no indication that the gunman and Grimmie knew each other.
The suspect appeared to have no criminal record, Mina added.
Grimmie finished third during Season six of NBC's "The Voice" in 2014. Before taking part in "The Voice", she had gained attention online with her Youtube videos featuring covers of pop songs.
