US balcony crash fatal for 6 Irish students
A fourth-floor balcony of a California apartment building collapsed yesterday, killing six Irish students and leaving seven other people with serious injuries during a 21st birthday party, officials said.
All six of the dead in the college town of Berkeley were in the United States on temporary work visas, Irish Foreign Minister Charlie Flanagan said in Dublin.
Police were working with fire and building officials to determine what caused the accident. No information was available on the identities of the victims.
Police received a noise complaint concerning a loud party in the apartment about an hour before the balcony collapsed at 12:41am but had not yet responded, said Officer Byron White, spokesman for the Berkeley Police Department.
The balcony, estimated to have been 1.52 meters by 3.05 meters, separated completely from the building and landed on a lower balcony.
鈥淲hat the first responders said is it was quite disturbing,鈥 White said. 鈥淎nytime you have a tragedy like this it鈥檚 quite awful.鈥
Two Irish students asleep in the building said they heard a bang during the accident. 鈥淚 walked out and I saw rubble on the street and a bunch of Irish students crying,鈥 said Mark Neville, who鈥檚 been in the US for three weeks under the J-1 visa program.
鈥淚 just heard a bang and a lot of shouting,鈥 added Dan Sullivan, 21.
The building in the heart of Berkeley has apartments in the upper floors and retail shops at ground level. The walkable neighborhood just blocks from the University of California, Berkeley, is dotted with museums, a city library, restaurants, coffee shops and chain stores.
The Library Gardens apartments were built in 2006, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Ireland鈥檚 Department of Foreign Affairs said it was trying to contact families of the victims and could not give details of their identities. Four died at the scene and two in a hospital.
Irish President Michael D. Higgins said in a statement that he had 鈥渉eard with the greatest sadness of the terrible loss of life of young Irish people and the critical injury of others in Berkeley, California today. My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of all those involved.鈥
