US first lady puts women on top with Spotify list

Michelle Obama has revealed musical tastes that include Beyonce and past greats such as Billie Holiday as she released a first playlist on streaming service Spotify.

Following a separate playlist by her husband, America鈥檚 first lady yesterday released her own for the International Day of the Girl, part of a United Nations campaign to end extreme poverty by improving education and health for women and girls worldwide.

Obama opened her playlist with a contemporary anthem to female empowerment 鈥 鈥淩un the World (Girls)鈥 by Beyonce.

Last month, Beyonce brought Michelle Obama on stage at the Global Citizen Festival in New York, where the first lady promoted a campaign to bring education to the estimated 62 million girls around the world who are out of school.

Obama also picked 鈥淪urvivor鈥 by Beyonce鈥檚 former band Destiny鈥檚 Child as well as songs by Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys and Janelle Monae.

She also reached back to classics including Holiday鈥檚 1944 version of 鈥淥n the Sunny Side of the Street,鈥 Diana Ross鈥檚 hit 1970 take on 鈥淎in鈥檛 No Mountain High Enough鈥 and, closing the playlist, Aretha Franklin鈥檚 signature song 鈥淩espect.鈥

While the playlist, in line with the theme, is overwhelmingly female, men were represented with a song by Norwegian rappers Nico & Vinz.

The only other men on the playlist came on 鈥淢y Shot,鈥 a tune from the acclaimed Broadway hip-hop musical 鈥淗amilton,鈥 composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Five artists had the distinction of being on the playlists of both Obamas 鈥 Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill and Billie Holiday.
