US President Barack Obama signed an order yesterday to freeze all US assets of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and his children.
The move targets the Libyan government "while protecting the assets that belong to the people of Libya," Obama said in a statement.
The sancations came after hundreds of US citizens and embassy personnel were evacuated from Libya earier in the day.
