US man gets 82 months in prison for trying to join IS
A US man who admitted trying to join the Islamic State (IS) was sentenced to 82 months in prison on Friday, the US Justice Department said in a statement.
According to the statement, Michael Wolfe pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to the IS after he was arrested at a Houston airport in June 2014.
Wolfe has acknowledged that he applied for and acquired a US passport, participated in physical fitness training, practiced military maneuvers and made efforts to conceal his communications about his plans to travel overseas to engage in violent jihad, the statement said.
The 24-year-old man had planned to travel to Europe where he was scheduled to meet an FBI undercover agent, who he believed would help him travel through Turkey into Syria so he could take up arms for the IS.
In May, a 37-year-old US salesman also pleaded guilty to federal charges that he supported terrorists, saying he bought a one-way ticket to join the IS.
US Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson said that over 22,000 fighters from around the world, including nearly 4,000 from Western countries and 100 from the United States, had flocked to conflict-torn Syria to join the IS.
