US readies possible solo action against Syria
US President Barack Obama on Thursday prepared for the possibility of launching unilateral American military action against Syria within days as Britain opted out in a vote by Parliament.
Despite roadblocks in forming an international coalition, Obama appeared undeterred and advisers said he would be willing to retaliate against Syria on his own.
Britain's House of Commons yesterday voted to reject a government motion on military action against Syria after eight hours of intense debate.
The motion, calling for "a strong humanitarian response from international society" that includes military action, was defeated by 272 votes to 285.
Speaking after the vote, Prime Minister David Cameron said it was clear that "the British parliament, reflecting the views of the British people, does not want to see British military action."
"I get that, and the government will act accordingly," Cameron said.
