US state of South Carolina plans to evacuate over 1m ahead of hurricane

US state of South Carolina will start evacuate over 1 million residents from its coastal areas on Wednesday as the state was bracing itself for Hurricane Matthew, one of the most powerful storms to hit the region in almost a decade, the state's Governor Nikki Haley said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference, Haley said the goal was to evacuate everyone living along the coast to move at least 100 miles inland before the storm's projected impact this weekend.
"This is not something that we want to play with," said Haley. "The worst-case scenario is that you get stuck on the coast and have no place to go."
Hurricane Matthew began to influence Jamaica on Sunday, dumping rains that triggered floods and landslides blocking roadways.
On Tuesday, the Category 4 hurricane made landfall in Haiti, prompting the UN Children's Fund to warn that more than four million children may be exposed to the damage of the hurricane on the impoverished Caribbean island.
