US supports power transfer in Yemen, says White House

THE US supported a "peaceful transfer of power" in Yemen which is "responsive to the aspirations" of its people, the White House said in a statement yesterday.

"We applaud the announcements by the Yemeni Government and the opposition that they have accepted the GCC-brokered agreement to resolve the political crisis in a peaceful and orderly manner," White House said.

It said the US encouraged all parties to "move swiftly" to implement the power transfer agreement so that the Yemeni people can soon realize "security, unity, and prosperity."

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh's ruling party and opposition announced yesterday that their official acceptance to the amended Gulf-mediated initiative of power transfer.

The plan sets 30 days as deadline for Saleh to announce his resignation after transferring power to his deputy and 60 days for the transitional president and the unity government to hold presidential elections.
