US thwarts car bomb plot targeting ceremony

The US authorities had thwarted a car bomb attack targeting a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland yesterday, the Associated Press reported early today.

"The bomb turned out to be a dud supplied by undercover agents as part of a sting," said the report.

The plot was carried out by Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a Somali-born teenager, who is a naturalized US citizen.

He was arrested at about 5:45 p.m. local time after he told somebody in a mobile phone call that a van laden with explosives would be blown up, said the report.
