WWII shells found in Albania-Macedonia border lake

ALBANIAN and Macedonian explorers yesterday discovered ammunition dating from World War II at the bottom of the Lake of Ohrid near the eastern Albanian city of Pogradec.

Explorers photographed and filmed the spots and would send the recordings to the authorities of both countries, according to Albanian Daily News.

They called for efforts to clear the entire Lake of Ohrid of such shells, which constitute a serious threat to the lives of local residents and vacationers.

The lake, which straddles the mountainous border between southwestern Macedonia and eastern Albania, is one of Europe's deepest and oldest lakes. It was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979.
