The first quake struck at 2:31pm local time and was centered 10 km southeast of Seddon, in the far north of the South Island, at a depth of 8 km, according to the government's GeoNet monitoring service.
It was a magnitude 6.2 quake and rated in intensity as severe.

A strong 4.2-magnitude quake struck at 2:41pm, centered 35 km northeast of Seddon at a depth of 5 km.
Six more severe quakes of measuring from magnitude 4.9 to magnitude 5.8 and two strong tremors, both measuring magnitude 4.5, followed over the next 20 minutes.
No injuries have yet been reported, although a house is reported to have collapsed near Seddon.
