Wheelock Square, one of the best business centres in Asia
NANJING Road West-Shanghai's preeminent business address and Puxi's Commercial hub. Introducing Wheelock Square, the iconic new building that will redefine the landscape of this vibrant business district. The arrival of this truly international-grade office tower will further enhance Shanghai's dynamic skyline. Towering 270-metre high above Shanghai's bustling cosmopolitan city, Wheelock Square is destined to redefine the dimensions of prestige and corporate image in premium-grade office buildings.
Located at 1717 West Nanjing Road, Wheelock Square is the tallest skyscraper in Puxi. With a total gross floor area of 150,000 square meters, Wheelock Square comprises a 61-story main tower - including 50 office floors - and two ancillary buildings that mainly host upscale retailers and high-end restaurants.
Designed by New York-based architectural firm Kohn Pederson Fox, the same team behind Shanghai World Financial Center, and developed by The Wharf (Holdings) Limited, Wheelock exemplifies both an eco-friendly concept and state-of-the-art provisions. The design awarded a bronze prize in the Best Business Centre Category at the recently closed MIPIM Asia real estate awards.
Championing environmental architecture in Shanghai, Wheelock Square has utilized a low-emissivity (Low-E) glass facade that maximizes natural light penetration into the building and helps prevent heat loss. At 3.05 meters Wheelock Square boasts the highest ceilings of any modern office tower in Shanghai with stunning views.
Additional green design elements include water-saving taps throughout the building, an HVAC indoor air quality system and standard energy efficient T5 lighting. A 24/7 building management system controls the lighting, air-conditioning and energy usage. There is independent fresh air intake on all floors, and full waste recycling is standard throughout the building.
Aside from Wheelock Square's landscaped gardens, the complex is bordered by a green belt comprising Jing'an Temple and the grounds of the adjacent Children's Palace, offering a tranquil escape from downtown Puxi.
Innovation at the forefront
Upon completion in 2010, Wheelock welcomed its first tenant to the LEED Gold certified building. The LEED Gold certificate was from the US-based Green Building Council. This award to the office of global architecture and design firm NBBJ recognizes Wheelock as a pioneer in sustainable building design.
Despite high rentals, which have already made it one of the most expensive office towers in the city, the new landmark building has seen existing tenants commit to more space due to its prime location, sustainable building techniques and sophisticated property management services.
High-profile tenants from both home and abroad include Hays, Bristol-Myers Squibb, DP Architects, Mitsui, NBBJ, LG Chem, Sheppard Mullin, Conde Nast, FANCL, Coach, AECOM, Aleris, Toshiba, Clarkson Asia, Shiseido and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.
An established reputation coupled with its premium address has made Wheelock a hot place for the world's top fashion brands and for art exhibits.
Art in community
Between October 20 and November 8, 2011, an exclusive Shanghai retrospective of the works of internationally acclaimed Polish-American photo artist Ryszard Horowitz was held in the vast open ground floor lobby of Wheelock Square.
This exhibition represented the artist's Shanghai debut and further strengthened Wheelock Square's position as a center for business, design and culture in China. It also showed its commitment to becoming the most sought after location in Asia for corporate headquarters.
"We are really honored to bring Mr. Horowitz's works to Wheelock Square in Shanghai for this exhibition, says Mr. Edwin Liu, deputy general manager (Centre Management) of Wheelock Square. "His works have always pushed the boundaries of photo art and he is a pioneer in his art form. Wheelock Square is an ideal showcase for his work, a building that is modern and dynamic, and has innovation at the very center of its design."
Already one of the most sought after locations for China headquarters, top-tier international fashion brands and world-class art exhibitions, Wheelock Square is gearing up for further success by securing its position as the city's most coveted corporate address.
