Widow hid assets
THE wife of the late Japanese painter Ikuo Hirayama concealed US$3 million worth of her husband's assets to avoid a hefty tax bill, reports said yesterday. Hirayama died in 2009 leaving assets worth one billion yen (US$10 million), newspapers said. His 87-year-old wife failed to report 200 million yen in cash and reported the value of copyrights at 100 million yen less than the real amount. She was forced to pay 150 million yen in back taxes and penalties.
