World is (RED) for a day
MORE than 80 landmarks across 13 countries - including the Empire State Building in New York - were illuminated in red yesterday to mark World AIDS Day.
AIDS charity (RED) is behind the initiative, which aims to remind people of the drive to stop mother-to-child HIV transmission by 2015.
"Our awareness campaign is a call for the world to work together to help us achieve this attainable and critical goal," said international chief executive of the charity Seb Bishop.
The event was launched on Tuesday in Sydney, where Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, along with rock star Bono, lit up the opera house.
From there, the Tokyo Tower in Tokyo, Table Mountain in South Africa, the Hotel de Ville in Paris, Madrid's Puerta de Alcala, the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada, the Washington Monument and others in every time zone were all lit up in red, before the initiative came to an end in Los Angeles.
