Yemen in talks to free hostages
YEMEN has started negotiations with kidnappers holding one British and five German hostages, the Yemeni foreign minister said yesterday, a day after his German counterpart visited the conflict-ridden country.
"The negotiations are now going on with the kidnappers of the German and British hostages," the minister, Abubakr al-Qirbi, said.
Washington does not plan to send soldiers to Yemen, United States President Barack Obama said on Sunday.
US military operations in Yemen and civilian deaths in attacks on militants are sensitive because they could fuel support for al-Qaida in Yemen.
Qirbi said yesterday the US believes Yemeni forces are best placed to combat a resurgent al-Qaida in the country, the ancestral home of Osama bin Laden.
"The Americans themselves are convinced that to rely on local forces is the best way to deal with the terrorist organizations," Qirbi said.
German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said on Monday the Yemeni authorities had located the German couple and their three children who are being held hostage in Yemen.
The German family and the Briton were among a group of nine foreigners kidnapped in the Saada region. Two Germans and a South Korean were later found dead.
