Yemen's security forces kill key al-Qaida member in Aden
YEMENI security forces killed one of "the most dangerous al-Qaida elements" in clashes in the southern port city of Aden, the country's defense ministry said yesterday.
"The most dangerous al-Qaida terrorist Walid Abdel-Latif al- Kayani was killed in armed clashes with security forces in Aden late on Thursday," said the ministry's website.
Meanwhile, a local police official in Abyan's provincial capital city of Zinjibar told Xinhua that militants of al-Qaida wing carried out an attack earlier yesterday on a security checkpoint in Zinjibar, killing two policemen and a passerby.
Another policeman and a passer-by were wounded in the attack, in which the al-Qaida militants set a security vehicle on fire before fled, the official said on condition of anonymity.
On Thursday, al-Qaida gunmen attacked an intelligence headquarter in Zinjibar, injuring a policeman and a citizen, according to the ruling party's website.
A senior official of the Interior Ministry told Xinhua yesterday that the Yemeni counter-terrorism Special Forces have pulled out from major provinces to Sanaa to help defend the capital and prevent potential chaos.
Yemen has witnessed three-month-long anti-government protests, which demanded an immediate end to the 33-year rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh and undermined the security and stability of the country.
