POLICE have arrested a young Indian couple for killing seven relatives who opposed their relationship.
The arrests were made on Saturday after the lovers confessed, senior superintendent of police Anil Kumar Rao told television news channel CNN-IBN.
Rao said the two served food containing an intoxicant to the relatives on September 14. After the family members became unconscious, the couple strangled them, he said.
All seven - the girl's parents, a brother and four cousins - were found dead in their beds the next morning in Kabool Pur, a village about 95 kilometers northwest of New Delhi, Rao said.
The two told police they were in love, but the girl's family opposed the relationship because they belonged to the same sub-caste, he said. Conservative Hindu families by tradition do not marry in the same sub-caste.
Indian weddings are guided by strict social codes and caste system. The Hindu caste system divides India's people into four hierarchical groups, with hundreds of sub-castes within each, most drawn along occupational lines.
