Zambian gov't engages musicians in HIV/AIDS fight
A SENIOR Zambian government official has said music could be used as a very important tool for transmitting messages on HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support, the Zambian News and Information Service (ZANIS) reported yesterday.
Zambian deputy minister of Sports, Youth and Child Development, Angela Cifire, said on Friday at the graduation ceremony of 30 local musicians, who have been trained as HIV/AIDS peer educators and ambassadors, that the government will support initiatives that supplements its efforts in halting the spread of HIV/AIDS through behavioral change.
The Zambian Minister said musicians should use their talents to champion the fight against the pandemic which has caused havoc in this southern African country, adding that musician had a "big influence" in society.
The musicians have been trained with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), ZANIS said.
Speaking on behalf of other musicians, gospel singer Towela Nyirongo commended the government and other stakeholders for giving them an opportunity to use their talent to champion the fight against HIV/AIDS.
She said involving and creating programs that will give artists a platform to educate the masses on the dangers of HIV/AIDS will not only help to strengthen the fight but also equip and change people.
