Veteran ABC sports commentator Jim Maxwell has been taken ill in Sydney during a live radio broadcast.
The 66-year-old was commentating on the Rio Olympics earlier this morning when he became unwell.
He is now at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital undergoing tests.
ABC head of sport Nick Morris said his thoughts were with Maxwell and his family, and he wished him a swift recovery.
Having covered more than 270 Test matches and six world cups, Maxwell has also authored several books on cricket and has edited ABC Cricket magazine — Australia's longest running cricket publication — since 1988.
He had ambitions to be a cricket commentator from the age of 15, and finally got his opportunity as a trainee on his third attempt — he "auditioned" with the 1973 Sydney Test between Australia and Pakistan.
''To do cricket commentary well, you have to be around it for quite a while — not get too self-indulgent, not get too carried away, not get too forgetful about what the audience needs to hear,'' Maxwell told Fairfax in a 2012 interview.
Sports reporting has changed significantly since ABC's most experienced cricket commentator first joined the national broadcaster.
"In those days the ABC had the lot," he said, "whereas today sports coverage on the radio is a big factor the ABC, but back then it was on TV as well.
"ABC TV did all the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Test cricket, AFL, you name it.
"We were doing both theatres, radio and television. So for a young fellow coming in it was great to learn."
