ACT Government announces two-year car sharing trial service in Canberra

The ACT Government has announced a two-year trial of car sharing, with 22 spaces around the city designated for the service.

The cars will be provided by two companies, GoGet and Popcar, that have already established the sharing service in other cities.

Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said car sharing would benefit the environment and people's pockets.

"[The cars] are generally very fuel efficient and often hybrid cars," she said.

"So for people that will mean they will be cheaper to use and cheaper to run.

"They also have great environmental benefits in lowering our greenhouse gas emissions as well."

The National Capital Authority (NCA) also gave their tick of approval to the service, contributing car spaces on National land.

Chief Executive of the NCA, Malcolm Snow, said it was "pleased" to support the initiative.

"The program should encourage less care usage for individuals and fewer cars on the road," he said.

"In turn this should mean less pollution and congestion on our roads."

The only car parks initially set aside for the service were in Civic, Dickson, Russell and near the Treasury building.

But Ms Fitzharris said expanding the services to the rest of Canberra was on the Government's agenda.

"We will certainly consider that as people become members of the car sharing companies and people start to use it more," she said.

"I think demand will build and we'll be very keen to stay in touch with the companies ... to see if there is more we can do to support more transport options for Canberrans."
