ACT Government to fully duplicate Ashley Drive, matching Opposition pledge

The ACT Government has pledged a further $3.5 million to fix a potential traffic bottleneck in Canberra's south, with the Government backtracking on its original plan to duplicate only a section of Ashley Drive.

Last year, the Government announced a $24.6 million upgrade and duplication of Ashley Drive between Erindale Drive and Ellerston Drive, which included a pedestrian bridge and noise barriers.

But the duplication was set to end at Ellerston Avenue, about 550 metres short of where the road finishes at Johnson Drive.

The announcement follows an ACT Liberal election pledge from March to undertake the full duplication of the road, ensuring no bottlenecks.

Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said after community consultation the Government has decided to fully complete the duplication, with funding being allocated in next month's budget.

"Ashley Drive is a key access road for the Tuggeranong region which is currently used by around 22,000 vehicles each day," she said.

"This funding commitment follows an extensive community consultation on the preliminary designs for the duplication of Ashley Drive in late 2014, and now we will get on with delivering its full duplication for the Tuggeranong community."

Ms Fitzharris said upgrade work on Ashley Drive had already begun.

"The upgrade will also cater to active travel, with north and southbound on-road cycle lanes and additional footpaths to link with existing off-road paths," she said.
