Building fire prompts evacuations at Belmore in Sydney

More than a dozen people had to be evacuated after a fire broke out at a construction site in Sydney's south west last night.

Emergency crews were called to Canterbury Road at Belmore just before 11:00pm and found the split-level partially-constructed building well alight.

New South Wales Fire and Rescue Inspector Mick Wren said extra resources were needed to tackle the fire.

"The fire proved pretty difficult due to the access issues for the firies with scaffolding and boarding at the front of the building, and a basement proved quite difficult to extinguish the fire in," he said.

"We had two aerial applications at work and we brought in a specialist foam pumper who were able to put foam on the basement fire to assist with putting the fire out."

Police have set up a crime scene in the area.

Inspector Wren said investigators were trying to determine the cause of the blaze and it was unclear at this stage whether it was suspicious.

"We're not sure what started the fire but it is under investigation and we will work closely with New South Wales police to determine a cause," he said.
