Canberrans to nominate where they would like speed cameras

Wednesday, 7 Sep 2016 05:36:32

Canberrans now have the chance to nominate on which streets mobile speed cameras should operate, while also gaining greater access to infringement data from the cameras.

From today, citizens can go online and nominate a site where they believe speeding is a problem.

The suggestions will be reviewed by traffic authorities and, if approved, added to the list of locations for mobile speed vans.

The Nominate a Mobile Camera Location application will feature on the ACT Government's new road safety camera website.

The page will also encourage community engagement and feedback on the use of the cameras.

To meet the criteria for mobile camera enforcement, the location must:

  • be at least 200 metres from a change of speed limit - this criterion does not apply if the site is a school zone;
  • be clear of merging lanes, changes of road alignment and/or road width; and
  • not cause any obstruction, line-of-sight issues or interruption to traffic flow.

The public will also now have access to data about infringements issued at each of the cameras locations.

"You can download an Excel document which contains data on all infringements issued over a 12 month period," Roads Minister Shane Rattenbury said.

"This section of the website will be enhanced over time to include a map showing the locations of all cameras.

Mr Rattenbury said he hoped the website would break down the stigma around cameras.

"I'm hoping that by being even more open and transparent with the publication of road safety data, infringement statistics and evaluations, that we can start to break down perceptions about speed cameras being used to raise revenue," he said.
