Fifty people are set to lose their jobs following an announcement that Tasmanian electrical company White and McAllister has been placed into administration.
Unions said the demise of the Hobart-based company, which was established in 1961, was due to poor management.
The contractor employs a range of tradespeople including electricians, plumbers, refrigeration mechanics, fitters and turners, and welders.
The company has been involved in projects for Hobart's Taste Festival, the Cadbury factory in Claremont, the University of Tasmania and Risdon Prison.
Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union (CEPU) organiser Michael Anderson said the development was not unexpected.
"They've had financial difficulties over a long period of time and to us it seemed fairly inevitable that this would happen," he said.
"Over a long period of time they've had some serious deficiencies in the way they've run the business."
Mr Anderson said it was a disappointing result for the company's staff who would lose their jobs if a buyer was not found for the company.
"It's painful for the workers and their families. They've lost their job security and potentially their jobs," he said.
"The guys have the qualifications and the experience to do work for any company. The work needs to be done by someone."
White and McAllister could not be contacted for comment.
