Electricity cut to 30,000 homes and businesses in Sydney

Electricity supplies have been cut to 30,000 homes and businesses in Sydney's north-west.

Network operator Ausgrid said a fault was detected at the Meadowbank substation, cutting power to the suburbs of Eastwood, West Ryde, Ryde and Rhodes.

A spokesperson said emergency crews were at the substation, trying to re-route power from other parts of the network.

He said crews thought there was a loud bang and smoke when the fault happened.

"We're still assessing the substation," he said.

It is hoped power can be restored by 9:00pm.

"It depends on technical work needed to be done to re-route power off another part of the network," he added.
