Flooding uncovers asbestos on Hobart Myer site

Tuesday, 2 Aug 2016 15:06:02

The Hobart Rivulet wall collapse and ensuing flooding has uncovered asbestos on the Myer Hobart redevelopment site.

The basement of the Liverpool Street store flooded when a section of the Hobart Rivulet wall collapsed at an adjacent construction site on Wednesday.

Water also flooded the nearby Murray Street worksite, where another Myer store is to be built, and there was structural damage to neighbouring stores.

WorkSafe Tasmania is looking at the size of the asbestos problem and will begin removal work immediately.

Several buildings adjacent to the Myer site also contained asbestos and some of these materials were also exposed after the flooding and wall collapse moved structures.

The Tasmanian Government is working through several of our agencies and departments to assist on the site, and to ensure that the safety of workers and the wider community is paramount.

The State Government said there was no evidence that anyone had been affected.

The Government said that removing this asbestos would help to allow work to protect the adjoining buildings to continue.

The builder has engaged licensed asbestos removalists and it is expected an asbestos removal plan will be submitted to WorkSafe for approval within days.
