Forced redundancies begin at The West Australian

Monday, 1 Aug 2016 19:13:55 | David Weber

The West Australian newspaper has moved to forced redundancies after not enough staff chose to leave voluntarily.

The newspaper had wanted more than 20 personnel across the editorial arm to leave the organisation.

But even after an extension of time, there were not enough takers.

It is understood four employees were targeted for forced redundancies today.

It is not known how many more were expected.

In announcing the redundancies in June, Seven West Media — which owns The West Australian — said the newspaper was working towards a new organisational structure amid an unstable economic environment.

The union, the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance, is in ongoing talks with management.
