TasPorts has announced it has joined forces with a private operator to establish a forestry exports terminal at Hobart's Macquarie Point.
In July, the State Government confirmed Macquarie Point would replace Triabunna as Southern Tasmania's major forestry export centre, exporting up to 300,000 tonnes of forestry residue a year.
A spokesman for TasPorts said all storage and export activities would be done within the Southern Export Terminals port, supporting a Government promise there will be no woodchip piles on the city's waterfront.
"Southern Export Terminals will facilitate the reintroduction of log exports from the port of Hobart," Tasports Chief Executive Officer Paul Weedon said.
Mr Weedon said up to 25 new jobs would be created directly.
A statement from Southern Export Terminals said the log operation would have "no noticeable impact on the immediate and wider community with only 1-2 additional trucks per hour expected on the roads during operating hours".
Mr Weedon said a log truck curfew will be in place during peak traffic times.
Resources Minister Guy Barnett described the deal as a red-letter day for the forestry industry.
"This will unlock the potential in Tasmania's southern forests and, importantly, it will create jobs in regional Tasmania," he said in a statement.
"It provides a clear path forward for the industry and will help undo the damage done by Labor and the Greens and their job-destroying forestry deal."
The first shipment of logs is expected before April 2017.
