Government to acquire land to progress Mount Wellington cable car

The Tasmanian Government has announced plans to compulsorily acquire land on Hobart's Mount Wellington to help facilitate the construction of a cable car.

The much-discussed project was stalled in approval processes by the Hobart City Council.

Now the Government is moving to intervene and will introduce legislation to acquire the land needed.

"After careful consideration, the Government has decided to prepare new laws to acquire the public land on Kunanyi/Mt Wellington necessary for the project to proceed," said state growth minister, Matthew Groom.

"The Government will retain control and ownership of the land, the new laws will simply allow a cable car proponent to obtain the consent necessary to have the project proceed through the planning process."

Despite the project not being formally classified as "of state significance", Mr Groom said it was a big step forward.

"These new laws will provide the certainty needed for the Mt Wellington Cableway Company to progress its proposal," he said.

"The Government will release the draft laws for public comment shortly."
