Hinchliffe defends QR's internal search for new train drivers

There is nothing unusual about Queensland Rail recruiting internally for new train drivers, Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe says.

Mr Hinchliffe rejected criticism that his push to employ more drivers and guards had been hampered by a union agreement favouring existing staff.

He said although new crews were sought internally, there would be a second stage when external recruitment could take place.

"On October 24, I announced the recruitment of an additional 100 drivers and 100 guards would occur," he said.

"Consistent with practice and consistent with the 2013 and 2016 enterprise agreements, these applications were opened for internal applicants.

"I can advise that 394 applications were received for the 100 driver positions.

"Further, 505 applications were received for the 100 guard positions."

Mr Hinchliffe said the applicants would undergo psychometric and other tests.

"QR has already complied with all required steps to source drivers from internal applicants," he said.

"We have received those strong numbers of applicants, and following consideration of those applications, QR will then determine if external recruitment is required.

"These are practices that have been in place for many years, including under the 2013 agreement."
