Homes, businesses to be demolished for Melbourne rail project

The owners of 32 homes and businesses in Melbourne's south-east have been told their properties will be demolished as part of the State Government's level crossing removal program.

Twenty-five houses and seven businesses will go in Cheltenham as part of a plan to remove three level crossings on the Frankston line.

The railway line will go underground below Charman and Park roads in Cheltenham, and Balcombe Road in Mentone, instead of the elevated "sky rail" option on the Cranbourne-Pakenham line.

The State Government said the decision to lower the rail line had come after expert technical investigations and 12 months of consultation.

No acquisitions are required at Mentone.

The Cheltenham and Mentone stations will be rebuilt with underground platforms.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said it was a difficult time for the homeowners.

"Residents, property owners or tenants have been contacted last night and this morning to advise them of the confirmation that part or all of their property will be acquired," Ms Allan said.

"We'll continue to work with those families and residents understanding that it is a difficult time and that they need time to work through the next steps of what that means for them," she said.

Work will start on the level crossings next year.

Planning is underway for removal works on five other crossings on that line.

Rail bridges will be the only option for two sites in Frankston and Carrum.

The removals are part of the Government's plan to replace 20 level crossings by 2018, and 50 level crossings across the city in the next eight years.
