Huw Parkinson's mash-up of remakes in Hollywood

We are nearing "peak remake" as Hollywood runs out of ideas and is recycling through older films, film critic Zak Hepburn says.

The remake of the classic 1959 Ben-Hur film has triggered debate this week about Hollywood's obsession with returning to the well.

"It's terrible," Mr Hepburn told ABC News Breakfast.

"The director hasn't tried to put any new spin on it. It disregards the legacy of the original film, so it's one of those 'why did they even bother' ones.

"I genuinely do think there is some validity in new filmmakers tackling canon films, because you have that with literary adaptations.

"But adapting films I think a lot of time they get lazy and just recycle, and that's where the issue is.

"It does feel like we're is reaching peak remake where Hollywood is really bereft of ideas and they're remaking things that just don't need to be remade."

Ben-Hur joins a long list of remakes to have graced (or disgraced) the silver screen in recent years.

The ABC's Huw Parkinson offers his unique take on the remake with this montage of monotony.
