Rio Tinto chairman Jan du Plessis has announced his plans to retire as the company's chairman, after eight years in the role.
Mr du Plessis informed the board on Thursday of his intention to retire as soon as the board appoints his successor.
The board is expected to announce the new chairman by the end of 2017, with Mr du Plessis retiring no later than the 2018 annual general meeting in Australia.
The company has been planning for chair succession since June 2016 after the announcement of JS Jacques as the company's chief executive.
At the time of Mr Jacques' appointment, Mr du Plessis said he committed to serve for only two more years as part of a planned leadership transition.
"Today's announcement is the next step in that plan," he said.
"I remain committed to leading the board until I stand down, supporting the management team and ensuring an orderly handover to my successor.
"It has been a great privilege to chair Rio Tinto over the past eight years, during which time I have worked with some outstanding people across the business.
"The company has withstood the challenges of a cyclical industry and performed well. We have a robust balance sheet and a strong management team, let by an impressive chief executive in JS Jacques."
Multinational telecommunications company BT Group announced today that Mr du Plessis would join their board as a non-executive director on June 1, 2017 and would become chairman from November 1.
