Labor plans to move Midland train station

Labor has vowed to move the Midland train station and make it the centrepiece of new development precinct around the Midland Hospital.

The move would be part of Labor's long-term MetroNet plan for expanded passenger rail services in Perth.

Opposition Leader Mark McGowan has not yet nominated a timeframe or a cost, but believes there is great scope to offset the outlay with new developments.

"The site that it's going to be located is near the hospital. There are enormous development opportunities around it that will be, able to be, enhanced by the location of a new train station," he said.

"That would significantly offset the cost of building a new train station."

The station would move about a kilometre from its existing location on Victoria Street.

Labor believes the move would help drive innovative urban development in the precinct around Cale Street.

Labor Member for Midland Michele Roberts said shifting the station would be a unifying development for the area.

"A new train station, located in the vicinity of the hospital, linking through to other facilities in Midland is absolutely vital to this town's future," Mrs Roberts said.

She said the station was also important to the broader area.

"Midland station is not just about Midland itself. It's about the valley and hills. This is the end-of-the-line station for the eastern region," she said.

"So it's very important that we, at long last, have a quality station that's appropriately located with good facilities."

Mr McGowan said the Barnett Government had said at the last election they would move the station, but had not done so.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder has been contacted for comment.
