Major light rail construction work coincides with ACT election

The beginning of the major part of light rail construction work will coincide with the October ACT election, work approval documents show.

It means if the Opposition comes to power in October, they would not have to rip up any tram lines but they would still have to pay for a cancelling of the $698-million contract.

Last year the Canberra Liberals said any signed light rail contracts would be "torn up" if they won at the next election.

National Capital Authority (NCA) documents show construction is expected to begin along Flemington Road in October.

Between January and March next year excavation work will begin on Flemington Road to install tracks and over head wiring, with work to be completed mid year.

In January 2017 the first trenching works will begin along Northbourne Avenue, with the first tracks to be laid in August 2017.

Construction work around EPIC and the Federal Highway will begin in April.

By October 2017 all intersections along the entire alignment will be completed.

Construction of the overall project will be completed by late 2018, with the first trams running in early 2019.

The NCA will hold a public information session for the Works Approval application on March 1, 2016 with the consultation period closing on March 18.

Capital Metro Minister Simon Corbell said following the finalising of the contract, "critical preparation" work would begin in June, which has not been outlined in the NCA document.

"Construction works in terms of the enabling works, that utilise relocations, road widening and intersection adjustments will commence in June, July," he said.
