Mandogalup residents should be compensated if Kwinana buffer goes ahead: Greens

The Greens are urging the Western Australian Government to compensate more than 100 residents who are concerned the value of their homes will decrease if the proposed Kwinana buffer goes ahead.

Dozens of Mandogalup residents took to State Parliament on Tuesday to protest against the proposed buffer zone around the Kwinana Industrial area.

The residents say the 1.5-kilometre buffer between Alcoa's residue storage areas and residential developments is "unwarranted and excessive".

Greens Member for South Metropolitan Region Lynn MacLaren said 112 residents would lose out if the Government went ahead with the plan.

"The Government admitted that residents would not be compensated, claiming that the affected land in Mandogalup would not be 'injuriously affected," Ms MacLaren said.

"I met with residents earlier this month, who told me they were very concerned about house prices falling because of this and the restrictions that will most likely be placed on their land's development potential.

"Surely, compensation should be considered if the Government is going to change the potential usage of their properties."

Premier Colin Barnett has said the buffer was an important separation between industry and residential areas because it could become a health threat.

The buffer has been at the centre of an increasingly bitter dispute between locals, the Barnett Government which is standing firm on the proposal and the Satterley Property Group which wants to put a residential development on the proposed land.

Chief executive of the Satterley Property Group, Nigel Satterley, joined the protesting residents at State Parliament on Tuesday, driving his ongoing feud with the State Government deeper.

A consultant employed at the Satterley Property Group confirmed it had recouped some expenses from the fighting fund established by the residents, such as bus transportation to the protest.

The Kwinana Industries Council supports the Government's plan to strengthen buffer rules and wants the land to be protected by law.

The Government has referred the matter to the Environmental Protection Authority.
