Melbourne-based baby seat manufacturer Britax has announced it will shut down its Sunshine factory, leaving 80 people without jobs.
The company said it was the last local manufacturer of child car seats, but would move its production offshore.
Britax Australia managing director David Jackson said the company had conducted an internal review which found the factory was in need of significant investment.
"It is difficult for an Australian-based manufacturing operation to be efficient, particularly at a site which is almost 50 years old," he said in a statement.
The company said operations will be wound down over the course of 2017 and the first round of redundancies would start before the end of the year.
Britax Australia employs 170 workers in Australia.
The ABC has contacted the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union for a response.
