More than 100 jobs to go at shipbuilder ASC

Wednesday, 2 Mar 2016 13:01:37

More than 100 jobs will be cut from Adelaide-based submarine and shipbuilder ASC as project work winds down, the company has confirmed.

About 70 of those positions will come from the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) project, and another 40 positions will come from the Collins Class submarine maintenance program.

Employees have been told of the latest cuts.

The company said the AWD project was expected to see a progressive decline in the workforce needed between now and the end of the project.

It said the company was also moving from two submarines in deep maintenance at its South Australian facility to just one, and fluctuations in workforce numbers were "typical on projects such as this".

"Whilst it is always a difficult decision to let people go, this is a necessary action to ensure we are able to meet the operational and performance demands of our projects," the company said in a statement.

"With the competitive evaluation processes for future frigate and offshore patrol vessel projects still in the early stages, it is not possible to maintain the current number of employees on the AWD project as production work progresses towards completion.

"ASC stands ready, willing and able to take part in future submarine and shipbuilding projects and continues to maintain the capability to do so."

The announcement will start a six-week consultation process with the workforce.

No workers were expected to be leaving the company today.

The company said workers would be offered support through its employee assistance program and a newly established transition centre.

ASC currently employs 2,296 permanent staff in South Australia.
