More than 100 jobs to go in Sunday Times takeover

Seven West Media's takeover of the Sunday Times is likely to result in the loss of more than 100 jobs.

The group, owned by Kerry Stokes, has told employees more than a hundred full-time and casual workers in the printing area will not be retained.

It is believed only a minority of Sunday Times editorial staff will be kept on — as little as 15 from about 60.

Final numbers may not be known until late October.

Seven West Media, which owns The West Australian newspaper, was hoping to finalise the acquisition of the Sunday Times and website Perth Now by November 7.

That is when West Australian Newspapers, also owned by Seven West Media, was expected to become the publisher of the Sunday Times and Perth Now.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announced this month it would not oppose the takeover deal.

"Following an extensive review, the ACCC has reached the view that the proposed acquisition is, on balance, not likely to substantially lessen competition for either consumers or advertisers," ACCC chairman Rod Sims said in a statement.
