The operator of the Mount Lyell Copper Mine has pleaded not guilty to charges in relation to the death of a miner nearly three years ago.

Michael Welsh, 53, was killed in a mud rush in Queenstown on Tasmania's west coast in January 2014.

In the Magistrates Court in Burnie, Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT) pleaded not guilty to failing to comply with health and safety obligations in relation to the incident.

CMT's general manager at the time, Scot Clyde, pleaded not guilty to failing to comply with his duties as a site officer.

The case has been adjourned until next February.

The mine has been in care and maintenance mode since July 2014, with parent company Vedanta citing low copper prices.
