Plane reportedly 'in distress' over Sydney was just doing training

A small, twin-engine aircraft that prompted concerns after it looked like it was in distress over Avalon Beach, in Sydney's north, was actually completing a training exercise.

Authorities were alerted to a plane reportedly labouring and smoking from its engine around 10:00am.

After a number of triple-0 calls, Westpac Rescue helicopter, PolAir, and the Marine Area Command commenced a search for the plane.

Stephen Leahy, from Westpac Rescue, said members of the public reported the plane was "in distress".

"Nothing sounded right about how the aircraft was flying," Mr Leahy said of the reports.

But Westpac Rescue later called off the search after inquiries revealed the plane was conducting a training exercise.

Mr Leahy said it was advisable for anyone undertaking a simulated engine failure to alert Air Traffic Control.

"It looks exactly like the real thing," he said.

"People would have heard the engine coughing and splattering … and probably some sort of descent.

"It's wise to let someone know if you're intending to do something like that."

The light plane has since landed at Bankstown Airport.
