Queensland Rail boss, chairman resign over driver crisis

Queensland Rail (QR) has confirmed its CEO, Helen Gluer, has resigned over the Brisbane train debacle that has led to hundreds of cancelled services over the past week.

ABC News has been told the Chairman of the Board Michael Klug has also handed in his resignation this afternoon.

The trouble began after the new Redcliffe Line was opened earlier this month, but QR had not factored in the need for more train drivers to meet the additional services.

The head of service delivery for QR was stood down two days ago.

QR has implemented an interim timetable to meet morning and afternoon peaks.

About 40 train services in and around Brisbane were cut or changed earlier this week, the number is set to rise to 50 on Friday.

The State Opposition has been calling for the Transport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe to be sacked, but Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Government was not told about the delay.

Ms Gluer last week apologised for the cancellations, saying it had been "from our customers' perspective, totally unacceptable".

"This is my fault. This is Queensland Rail's fault," she said.

Former Rio Tinto executive Phillip Strachan has been appointed to investigate what went wrong.
