Queensland-first workforce promised for Carmichael mine

Tuesday, 6 Dec 2016 09:51:30

Workers for Adani's mega coal mine will be sourced from regional Queensland, with the Indian giant's chairman agreeing not to use foreign workers on 457 visas.

Gautam Adani met Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk at the Port of Townsville boardroom this morning, with the northern city named yesterday as the regional headquarters for the $22 billion Carmichael mine.

"The coal will be mined in regional Queensland by regional Queenslanders," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"I've got an iron-clad guarantee that there will be no 457 visas.

Fast facts:

  • Townsville to be home to regional HQ and remote operations centre
  • Rail and port operations HQ in Bowen
  • Mining services to be based in Mackay
  • Projects to be sourced from Townsville, Charters Towers, Rockhampton, Emerald, Clermont and Moranbah
  • Decision on whether Townsville or Rockhampton will be FIFO hub due 2017

"I secondly have a guarantee of a Queensland-first policy for jobs, and especially for regional Queensland."

Alongside the Queensland worker commitment Mr Adani also proposed to establish a $200 million large-scale solar project near Moranbah.

Furthermore it was confirmed today that Townsville and Rockhampton have been shortlisted to by the fly-in, fly-out hub for the operation.

While the mine, which will be created in the Galilee Basin, has federal and state approval, it is still awaiting a water licence.

Ms Palaszczuk said the project has gone through rigorous assessments, again promising the Great Barrier Reef and the Caley Valley Wetlands will be protected from the disposal of dredge spoil from the Abbot Point expansion.

More to come.
