RACT ditches expansion plan for Freycinet National Park

Tasmanian motoring body the RACT has scrapped plans to expand its east coast accommodation further into the Freycinet National Park.

It had planned to take over another 5.6 hectares of the national park to accommodate more motor homes and cabins.

But the proposal was facing resistance from a small group of members who started a campaign against it.

In a statement today, RACT chief executive Harvey Lennon said the organisation group had revised the plans after consultation with members and stakeholders, including Parks and Wildlife.

Any redevelopment will now be confined to the existing Freycinet Lodge footprint.

Members fighting the plan wanted to force the RACT board to hold a special general meeting to discuss it.

"We recognise that any development at Freycinet Lodge must be sustainable and sensitive to the environment in which it is located," Mr Lennon said.

The proposal had already won a $1 million Federal Government grant, subject to final planning approval.

It is unclear if the business will be able to redirect the funds to its scaled-down version.

Mr Lennon said the RACT was continuing to work with tourism entrepreneur Brett Torossi to finalise a concept for the existing site.

"The development concept includes a number of spa cabins, the addition of access rooms and enhanced amenities in the main lodge building," he said.
