Road accident registry could improve road safety, car lobby says

The road toll has risen 7 per cent nationally for the year to September, the AAA says. (ABC Rural: Anthony Pancia)
Australia's road safety could be improved with a very small investment in a national database of injuries and accidents, the Australian Automobile Association says.
The group blames the rise in Australia's road toll on what it says is a widespread lack of investment in road safety by all governments.
A jump of more than 7 per cent in road deaths nationally for the year to September could be blamed on the failure to have a standard national record of road trauma, the AAA said.
AAA chief executive Michael Bradley said there was no clear reason for the rise in deaths, with NSW up 17 per cent, Victoria up 14 per cent and the Northern Territory up 11 per cent.
Mr Bradley said there was very poor data and a lack of a national tally of injuries, meaning there are no explanations for where and how road accidents occur.
"The problem we have in this country is that we have some very poor data," he said.
"You can't manage what you're not measuring so for a very small investment, something in the order of $150,000 a year, the Australian Government, we think, should be looking to support the continuation of a trauma registry and trying to use that data to ascertain how they can be reducing the road toll."
Mr Bradley said all governments had committed to cut the road toll by a third by 2020, and the AAA is also concerned governments are not investing enough in roads and rail.
