Sculpture by the Sea winner announced in Sydney

West Australian artist Johannes Pannekoek has won this year's $60,000 award for best Sculpture by the Sea in Sydney.

The artist said the steel piece called Changes Ahead 2016 was inspired by the way we live and learn.

He said the work showed the non-linear nature of life.

"Just like a river, it changes course, I've changed my career on a number of occasions and you hope to learn from one and then set off to the next task," Mr Pennekoek said.

It was one of 104 sculptures on exhibition in this year's event featuring artists from 17 countries.

Sculpture by the Sea has become one of Sydney's most popular cultural events, but it almost did not go ahead this year, until a last-minute deal secured a new major sponsor.

Now in its 20th year, founder David Handley has called for more government support to ensure the exhibition's long-term future.

"The artists are having to cover their own freight costs, that's not fair and it's not right in a country like Australia when half a million people visit this exhibition," Mr Hadley said.

He said the Changes Again sculpture would be given a permanent public placement on Sydney Harbour, at North Sydney, as a way of celebrating the exhibition's anniversary.

NSW Premier Mike Baird said Sculpture by the Sea was an "iconic exhibition that continues to renew iself year after year".

"Sculpture by the Sea has been drawing crowds to this beautiful stretch of Sydney coastline for 20 years and has become a highly anticipated annual event," Mr Baird said.

He said the exhibition always surprised and delighted audiences, "enabling it to grow to become one of the world's largest free sculpture exhibitions".
