Seven West Media (SWM) has announced the retirement of its WA chief executive Chris Wharton.

SWM chairman Kerry Stokes acknowledged Mr Wharton's 20-plus year contribution, while making the announcement.

"Last year Chris took the opportunity to take some extended leave and after a discussion with the chairman, they agreed that is was an appropriate time for Chris to retire," a statement said.

"The chairman said he is sorry to see Chris leave, but he has had a very long and successful innings with the group."

Mr Wharton's retirement follows the merger between SWM's The West Australian and the Sunday Times, and comes amid speculation of continuing dissatisfaction with his performance, that was first flagged in the 2015 annual report.

Mr Wharton issued a statement which said he was departing with mixed emotions.

"The company has been very good to me and my family. I've had the opportunity to work with many wonderful people and I'll miss them," he said.

Seven West Media shares slumped more than 6 per cent to 73 cents last month after it announced 91 per cent fall in half-year profit.

The company's share price is currently hovering around 71 cents.
