NSW police are examining a suspicious device, initially thought to be a homemade bomb, that sparked an emergency response after being found at a power substation in Sydney today.
Officers said the item, discovered at a Penrith electricity substation, resembled a "crude petrol bomb" consisting of a container of liquid and a battery.
Forensic examinations will continue to determine the device's contents, but police said it did not contain any explosives.
Shortly after 8:00am, Endeavour Energy workers discovered the object within the facility's perimeter.
"We located a device as a result of a routine inspection this morning at the Kingswood substation," Endeavour spokeswoman Kate McCue said.
"It appears it was thrown over the fence and it might have broken into pieces."

Bomb squad officers wearing helmets and body protection were seen examining the object in the street.
Once they were confident it would not explode, they removed the device for further analysis.
The discovery triggered the closure of streets, but the exclusion zone has since been removed.
In a statement, police said investigators were still examining the objects.
"An initial examination was not able to determine the contents of the objects, however no explosives were detected," the statement read.
"They have been removed and will be forensically examined."
The substation powers 13,000 homes and businesses including Nepean Hospital.
Police are asking anyone who noticed suspicious behaviour in the area to contact them.
