New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced a new underground concourse for Sydney's Central station as part of the Government's plan to upgrade the precinct.
The 19-metre concourse, called Central Walk, will link Chalmers Street to the existing platforms for heavy rail, and the new metro platforms.
The entire station will be renovated to include escalators to suburban platforms and shops.
"If you go to many great railway stations around the world, they do have amazing precincts and I think this has a lot of potential," Ms Berejiklian said.
"In many cities, it's really easy to change your mode of transport and this will make it the case here."
Central station is the busiest in the country. More than 250,000 people use it every day, with that number expected to rise to 450,000 in the next two decades.
Transport Minister Andrew Constance said the upgrade would make access easier for all customers.

"Everyone has seen people lugging bags upstairs and the like - what we're going to see is a modern day Central," he said.
The Minister said although tunnelling would take place under three platforms, the number of train services would not be cut during the construction period.
"Platforms 13, 14 and 15 will be dug out and we will see a new metro station built," Mr Constance said.
Construction of Central Walk will begin next year and is expected to take three years, although the Sydney metro will not be complete until 2024.
The Transport Minister said one property and "a number" of businesses that lease at Central station would be affected by the works.
"In terms of acquisitions the point that I'd make is we are now putting in individual case managers to assist property owners," Mr Constance said.
