Telstra: Future in the cloud (The Business)
Telstra has confirmed it wants to cut 27 jobs from its Netley site in Adelaide's west as part of a national restructure.
About 50 jobs will be axed from the company's high-speed data department across the nation, with the other jobs going from Tasmania and regional Victoria.
The Communication Workers' Union said Telstra had already outsourced substantial amounts of its Wideband Design work to an India-based company and was promoting the latest move to make its workforce more "flexible".
Telstra South Australia general manager Mark Bolton said no jobs would be outsourced overseas because the "India-based company" had offices in Sydney.
He said the proposed restructure was about improving quality and service.
"We have 21 different locations across Australia that actually do this work so it's about streamlining our operation more than anything," Mr Bolton said.
"We think if we adopt a national standard it will help reduce processing and production variation across 21 [locations], producing a better quality and more consistent work."
Telstra said staff had been notified and consultation on the plan was expected to wrap up next week.
It follows an announcement in July to cut 326 jobs nationwide, with a little under one-in-four being sent to is operations in the Philippines.
